Hot Chips Cookies

Last year we went to Bangalore for a friend’s wedding. We extended our trip by a couple of days to let Natasha re-live her college memories and take me to places that she would go to during her years at Christ University. One such place was a local potato chips vendor that used to make this spicy snack called “Hot Chips.” The moment I saw these chips, I realised that this needs to be incorporated into a recipe ASAP.

Enter the Hot Chips cookie! Get ready to experience a wild and delightful twist on traditional chocolate chip cookies with my new creation. As you take your first bite, you’ll be greeted by the rich, familiar taste of velvety chocolate chips, but the surprise doesn't stop there. The subtle heat from the spicy potato chips slowly emerges, adding an unexpected and irresistible zing to every mouthful. The crispy, salty potato chips also provide the perfect contrast to the sweetness of the chocolate, creating a delectable symphony of flavours and textures. These cookies are an adventurous fusion of sweet and savoury, creating a one-of-a-kind treat that will leave my taste buds craving more. Get ready to indulge in a cookie experience like no other!

Glimpses from the week

Recipe

Ingredients

200 grams unsalted butter, melted

1 cup (packed) dark brown sugar

⅓ cup granulated sugar

250 grams all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

¾ teaspoon table salt

3 eggs, room temperature

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

100 grams of Hot Chips, roughly crushed

1½ cups dark dark chocolate (preferably 55% cacao)

Flaky sea salt, as a garnish on top

Method

  1. Start by creaming brown and granulated sugars with butter by hand or with a fancy kitchenaid

  2. Next, sieve your dry ingredients, flour, salt, baking soda and powder and sift well.

  3. Mix the ingredients with the wet batter and slowly incorporate your eggs and vanilla essence.

  4. Let’s now add the fun stuff: Crush the hot chips and incorporate it into the batter with chopped dark chocolate.

  5. Scoop out perfect dollops of batter on a baking tray and garnish your dough with shards of chips and flaky salt. Pro tip- if you time, freeze the batter overnight. The flavour get enhanced much more!

  6. Preheat your oven to 185 Celsius (365 F). Place some of your cookie dough balls onto a lined sheet, sprinkle with sea salt, and stick it in the oven for 15-18 minutes (the time varies on how hot your kitchen was and if you froze your dough. If not, bake for 10-12 minutes)
